June 2026 | SuSu 2026: Sustainability-by-Default: From Good Intentions to Defensible Project Success with Haikal el Abed

Many projects begin with strong sustainability intentions. Fewer can defend those intentions when delivery pressure arrives. When cost, schedule, scope, procurement, political urgency, or stakeholder resistance intensify, sustainability often moves from decision-making into reporting or disappears completely.

This session introduces Sustainability-by-Default as a practical way to move from good intentions to defensible project success. Building on the newly released (end April 2026) PMI® GPM® P5™ Standard for Sustainability in Project Management Version 4 and the PMI® GPM® Practice Guide for Sustainability in Project Management Version 4, the session shows how project professionals can translate sustainability into impact analysis, thresholds, governance triggers, evidence, and delivery routines.

Participants will explore how P5 can be used not only as a sustainability lens, but as an impact architecture across People, Planet, Prosperity, Product, and Process. The session introduces a practical Sustainability-by-Default Decision Canvas that helps teams define sustainability outcomes, identify material impacts, set thresholds, monitor leading signals, collect lagging proof, and escalate decisions when sustainability commitments are at risk.

The session also addresses the role of AI. AI can help teams identify P5 hotspots, test assumptions, draft indicators, and expose evidence gaps. But it cannot replace accountable human judgment. Used responsibly, AI becomes a support mechanism for better sustainability governance, not a substitute for leadership.

Drawing on real project experience from complex transformation and development contexts, this session is designed for project managers, PMO leaders, sponsors, and sustainability practitioners who want practical tools they can apply immediately. The core message is simple: a project is not truly successful because it claims sustainable value. It is successful when that value can be evidenced, governed, and defended.

Core message: Sustainability-by-Default means making sustainability part of the normal mechanics of project success: impact analysis, thresholds, evidence, governance, AI-supported analysis, and closure/transition.
