As a Programme Manager and proud member of the PMI UK Chapter, I recently had the honour of participating as a judge at the ENACTUS UK National Competition Top 20 round, held on 7th April at the prestigious Excel London. This incredible event showcased the entrepreneurial brilliance and unrelenting drive of university teams who have dedicated themselves to creating real-world solutions to societal challenges. My judging assignment on the 7th placed me within League 3, a vibrant and competitive group comprising teams from the University of Exeter, the University of Sheffield, Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin), King’s College London (KCL), and Cardiff University.

Each team presented their portfolio of social enterprises, meticulously drafted, and passionately delivered, showcasing their commitment to creating a better world through entrepreneurial action. Each team embodied the values of innovation, collaboration, and a commitment to social impact that Enactus champions. What struck me most profoundly during these presentations was the remarkable level of innovation embedded within each project. These were not mere academic exercises; they were tangible initiatives addressing real-world challenges with creative and sustainable solutions. From tackling food waste and promoting sustainable agriculture to empowering marginalised communities and developing accessible technologies, the breadth and depth of the projects were truly impressive.

The experience did not end there. On 8th April, I attended the final round of the competition, where the top four finalists—Cardiff, Durham, Southampton, and University College Dublin (UCD)—delivered presentations that left the audience awestruck. While Cardiff emerged victorious, it was clear that every team participating in this competition was a winner in their own right. The courage to identify a problem, the creativity to develop a solution, the resilience to overcome challenges, and the dedication to implement their vision are all hallmarks of true entrepreneurial success.
A Platform for Change
Enactus is more than a competition; it is a movement that empowers students to employ entrepreneurial action to address some of the world’s most pressing problems. The sheer diversity of projects presented during the Top 20 round was a testament to the creativity and determination of these young change-makers.
For example, Enactus Sheffield in League 3 developed an innovative solution to combat food waste while supporting vulnerable communities. Enactus Cardiff proposed a ground-breaking approach to solving climate change by creating a bioreactor that combines the absorption of Direct Air Capture technology with algae- the world’s most potent carbon eater that could have far-reaching implications for sustainable development. These projects were not only visionary but also grounded in practicality, demonstrating a deep understanding of project management principles, stakeholder engagement, and long-term sustainability.

The Spirit of Entrepreneurship
What struck me most during the judging process was the entrepreneurial spirit that permeated every presentation. These students were not simply identifying problems; they were passionately creating solutions with a clear focus on impact. They demonstrated a willingness to take risks, learn from setbacks, and iterate on their ideas—a mindset that is essential for driving innovation.
In League 3, Cardiff’s Spiruflow Algae Photobioreactor project stood out for its holistic approach to addressing environmental and social issues. Their initiative combined technological innovation with community empowerment, creating a scalable model that could be replicated globally. It was no surprise that Cardiff advanced to the finals and ultimately secured the top spot.

The Grand Finale
The final round on 8th April was nothing short of electrifying. The four finalist teams—Cardiff, Durham, Southampton, and UCD—delivered presentations that were as inspiring as they were impactful. Each team brought a unique perspective and approach to tackling complex challenges, from climate change to social inequality.
While the judges faced the unenviable task of selecting a winner, the atmosphere in the room was one of fellowship and mutual respect. Enactus Durham was announced as the runners-up while Enactus Cardiff emerged the winner. Cardiff’s victory was well-deserved, but the applause and cheers for all teams underscored a shared belief: every participant was a champion of change.

Beyond the Competition
The ENACTUS UK National Competition is a reminder that innovation and entrepreneurship are not limited to boardrooms or laboratories—they thrive in the hearts and minds of students who dare to dream big. These young leaders are not waiting for the future to unfold; they are actively shaping it through their actions today.
As a representative of the PMI UK Chapter, I was particularly impressed by the way teams applied project management methodologies to bring their ideas to life. From setting clear objectives to managing resources effectively, these students showcased skills that are invaluable in any professional setting. It was a proud moment to see how the principles we advocate for at PMI were being employed to drive meaningful change.
A Celebration of Zeal and Unity
What truly made this event special was the overwhelming zeal of every participating university and college. The energy in the room was contagious, and it was evident that these students were driven by a genuine desire to make a difference. Their passion, resilience, and collaborative spirit were a source of inspiration for everyone in attendance.
While Cardiff may have taken home the trophy, the real victory lay in the collective achievements of all teams. They reminded us that success is not just about winning; it is about the journey, the lessons learned, and the lives impacted along the way. And it did not stop there, Cardiff now has the enormous responsibility of representing the entire UK & I at the Worldcup final rounds in Bangkok later in September 2025. I personally believe that this team of brilliant minds would make good use of the feedback provided to further their research, delivery, and presentation to win it all.

A Call to Action
As I reflect on my experience at the ENACTUS UK National Competition, I am filled with hope and optimism for the future. These students are not just the leaders of tomorrow—they are the innovators, entrepreneurs, and change-makers of today. Also impressive is the fact that a good number of fellow judges are alumni of ENACTUS now giving back to the programme that is creating innovative entrepreneurs and future leaders.
To my fellow PMI members and readers of this article, I urge you to support and celebrate the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship in your communities. Let us continue to mentor, inspire, and empower the next generation to pursue their dreams and create a better world for all.
