A Mega Project in the Baltic Sea

18th March 2020 at 5.45 pm

Eni House, Basing View, Basingstoke, RG21 4YY

Main Speaker: Guido Giorgi

The presentation addresses a two billion €uro project consisting of the design, supply, transport, lay and startup of a subsea twin pipeline of 1,224 Km for each line across the Baltic Sea, from Vyborg, Russia to Lubmin near Greifswald, Germany.

The two 48” offshore pipelines are the most direct connection between the huge Russian gas reserves and the energy markets of the European Union.

The combined capacity of the two pipelines allows for the transport and delivery of a total of 55 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas a year to businesses and households in the EU for at least 50 years.

The Nord Stream route crosses the Exclusive Economic Zones of 5 nations, namely Russia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany, as well as the territorial waters of Russia, Denmark, and Germany.

Each of the pipelines is made up of about 100,000 steel pipes welded together.

Along the pipeline route, five harbor sites were organised and managed to supply concrete-coated steel pipes on a continuous basis to the lay barges.

Three specialized vessels were simultaneously used to weld and lay the pipelines, working at different segments of the project which was eventually successfully completed within budget and well in advance to the contractual schedule.
